The Rally To Read Reading Remediation Program
A Research-Based Reading Program for Struggling Readers

The Center for Learning & Development has designed an intensive reading remediation program built upon research by the National Institutes of Health. The program is primarily technology-based and incorporates the five skill areas deemed to be imperative to any balanced, research-based reading program: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency/rate, vocabulary, and comprehension. In addition, the program includes components which inspire a love for reading.

Reading Lab         As the program was originally designed, students move from one skill area to another every 15 to 20 minutes per station. The duration of the program depends on intended progress; however, 120 hours of intervention has produced an average of 2.3 years increase in students aged 13-17 who were an average of 5 years delayed. (Data: Bill Logue Juvenile Justice Center Boot Camp Reading Program, McLennan County, 2000-2004). In addition, the program has been replicated at 11 schools across Texas with similar results being reported. Waco Foundation funded a McLennan County project which allowed four of these schools to receive
Rally To Read implementation training from CLD.

Key to the program’s success is a Master Reading Teacher skilled in reading research and instructional strategies. The teacher works one-on-one with a student, conducting pre and post assessments as well as providing direct, intensive instruction in phonological awareness skills. Program requirements are designed for a lab serving a maximum of 8 students per class period for up to 6 class periods/day.
